A heart-wrenching news has emerged from Thane, Maharashtra, where 17 laborers lost their lives after a garden machine (crane) collapsed from a flyover in the Shahpur area. Three others were reported to be injured. According to Shahpur police, the accident occurred during the construction of the third phase of the Samriddhi Expressway. The crane fell from the top of the bridge, trapping several laborers underneath. Search and rescue operations are underway at the site, and the injured have been admitted to a hospital in Shahpur.

How did such a devastating accident occur?

As per a report by Vikrant Chauhan associated with Aaj Tak, this tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, 1st August, near Sarlanbe village in the Thakur Shahpur Tehsil. The construction work of the bridge was underway when suddenly the crane, which was attaching the girder, lost its balance and fell from a height of 100 feet along with the slab. Several laborers working below got trapped. According to officials, 16 bodies have been recovered so far, and three people are injured. There is a fear that the death toll may rise. Police and rescue workers are actively engaged in the rescue operation along with local agencies. The report highlights that there were no safety measures in place at the site, leading to such a large number of laborers losing their lives.

Which machine caused the accident?

According to officials, the accident occurred due to the collapse of a mobile gantry crane, which is used in bridge construction projects. Its purpose is to connect precast box girders in highway and high-speed rail bridge construction projects. The construction work of the Samriddhi Expressway is being carried out by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation.

The Samriddhi Expressway, also known as Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samriddhi Mahamarg, spans approximately 700 kilometers, connecting Mumbai and Nagpur. It passes through ten districts, including Nagpur, Washim, Wardha, Ahmednagar, Buldhana, Aurangabad, Amravati, Jalna, Nashik, and Thane. The inauguration of the first phase, which connects Nagpur to Shirdi, was done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2022. The completion of the third and final phase of this highway is expected by the end of this year.
