Toy pistol used in daring train robbery

Robbers held a whole bogey hostage and took away cash and jewellery in moving train

It just doesn't happen in movies. The robbers involved in the audacious train robbery on Sunday night in north Delhi used a toy pistol, besides knives, to take a bogey full passengers hostage.

They boarded the Simla-Delhi Himalayan Queen Express at Sonepat, Haryana and robbed the passengers in the general compartment of cash, jewellery, mobile phones and other valuables.

The passengers had complained that they took the entire bogey hostage on gunpoint. However, with the arrest of three accused in the case it has now been revealed that the gun was actually fake.

Sandeep, Ashok and Parveen Malik, all residents of Sonepat, were arrested for their involvement in the case. The police said that they have also confessed to their involvement in a similar robbery on the Delhi-Ambala Unchahaar Express on September 25.

Earlier, the police claimed that those who robbed passengers in the moving Himalayan Queen Express near Narela police station might be some locals from the area.

"The trio confessed that they targeted the general compartment of the train as they knew that there will be no Railway Protection Force (RPF) guard there. They carried arms to threaten the passengers in case they tried to resist," said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) Bhairon Singh Gujjar.

Seven mobile phones, two gold chains among other articles were recovered from them. The 'ustra' (razor) and one toy pistol used in the crime have also been recovered.

Gujjar added that the RPF officials have been asked to enhance security in Delhi bound trains, especially during the late evening hours.

All arrested are in their early 20's and belong to different villages in the Sonepat district. They used to board Delhi-bound trains from Sonepat and rob passengers.

"A special team has intensified efforts to nab the remaining members of the gang. Necessary help is also being taken in this regard from the Government Railway Police, Haryana," added Gujjar.
