Movie Review
Imtiaz Ali tries to give the simple story of Love Aaj Kal a dramatic ‘twist’ (also a song from the movie) but is unsuccessful. The much-anticipated film of the season has an impressive start, but proves to be drag towards the end.
Jai (Saif Ali Khan) and Meera (Deepika Padukone) meet in London and date for about a year. Meera decides to go to India to pursue her career. Realising that a long-distance relationship won’t work, they decide to part ways and also throw a ‘break-up’ party for the same.
An aged Veer Singh (Rishi Kapoor) narrates his love story with Harleen of the 70’s era to Jai who has just broken-up with Meera. The script takes its time to build as the two stories run parallelly.
Director Imtiaz Ali connects the two stories impressively with the help of some superlative editing and brilliant shots. The transition, in one scene Jai lifts a cup of tea and the other scene shows the cup being lifted by Harleen, is noteworthy. Sepia tone is used to good effect to depict Veer and Harleen’s story. The cinematography captures both the eras effectively.
‘Love Aaj Kal’ boasts of a pretty decent first-half and leaves you curious to know what will happen post intermission. However, too many sub-plots similar to films like Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le JayengeHum Tum prove to be a bore. In his attempt to create something path-breaking, Imtiaz complicates an otherwise simple story by giving a stretched climax - which is precisely where the film falters. and
Saif proves that he is a good actor yet again. His impressive act is quite apparent with his great body language. Deepika, although decent, is inconsistent and has scope for improvement. Rishi Kapoor doesn’t have much to do in the film. The new Punjabi girl comes as a pleasant surprise in the film and is a talent to watch out for in the future.
