Sony has officially unveiled its latest handheld gaming console, the PSP Go.

The Play Station Portable, which goes head to head with the Nintendo DSi, will go on sale on October 1 in North America and Europe for about $249 (£150), before hitting stores in Japan on November 1.

Speaking at the E3 videogames conference in Los Angeles, executives said it will be half the size of Sony's current PSP 3000 and 40 per cent lighter.

New features include built-in Wi-Fi, integrated Bluetooth and 16GB of internal flash memory.

After a leak earlier this week, video game web sites cited what they say was Sony's own promotional video clip.

The footage, which game web sites including IGN say was first distributed through Sony's online game information distribution service for paying U.S. subscribers, has been posted on YouTube.
