Read here Shikwa explained in English, and also listen to Shikwa in Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's voice.

Allama Iqbal

Muhammad Iqbal, better known by his honorary name Allama Iqbal wrote Shikwa (The Complaint to God) and Jawab-e-Shikwa (The Answer to the Complaint) in 1908 and 1923. Shikwa and Jawab-e-Shikwa, published in the third section of Allama Iqbal's book Bang-e-Dara (The Call of the Marching Bell), with poetry written before 1905 in the other two sections of the book. Shikwa and Jawab-e-Shikwa were written in Urdu and translated into English and Hindi.

Allama Iqbal recited Shikwa in 1909 at a Poetry Convention organized by Anjuman-i-Himakat-i-Islam, an Islamic Intellectual and Social Welfare Organisation. When Shikwa was published, it garnered criticism from Islamic clerics and Scholars, who comprehended it as dishonor towards Almighty and his blessings. It created controversies, and Allama Iqbal was called ungrateful and disloyal. However, when Allama Iqbal published Jawab-e-Shikwa as an answer from God to the complaint, he was honored for his work. Renowned qawwals such as the Sabri Brothers, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Aziz Miyan Qawwal have performed Shikwa and Jawab-e-Shikwa on numerous occasions.

Youngsters from all around the world are admirers of poet Allama Iqbal’s Shayari, specially Shikwa. They seek explanations of Shikwa in English and Hindi languages for understanding its beauty and philosophy.

Shikwa Stanza 1

Kyon ziaan kaar banun, sood framosh rahoon

Fikr-e-farda na karun, mahw-e-ghum-e-dosh rahoon?

Why should I abet the loss, why should I forget the gain,

Why forfeit the future, bemoan the past in vain?

Naale bulbul ke sunoon, aurhama tan gosh rahoon,

Hamnawa main bhi koi gul hoon ke khamosh rahoon?

Hear the wail of the nightingale, and remain unstirred,

Am I a flower insensate that will not say a word?

Jurrat aamoz miri taab-e-sakhun hai mujhko,

Shikwa allah se khakam badahan hai mujhko.

The power of speech emboldens me to speak out my heart,

I'll sure be damned, I know, if fault my God.

Shikwa Stanza 2

Hai Baja Shewa-e-Tasleem Mein Mashoor Hain Hum

Qissa-e-Dard Sunate Hain Ke Majboor Hain Hum

It is true to say, we are famous in our habit of submission,

We are helpless now in narrating our tales of pain,

Saaz-e-Khamosh Hain, Faryad Se Maamoor Hain Hum

Nala Ata Hai Agar Lab Pe To Maazoor Hain Hum

We are silent lutes, filled with anguished cries,

If our passionate cries come to our lips then excuse us, for we are helpless,

Ai khuda shikwa-e-arbab-e-wafa bhi sun le,

Khugar-e-hamd se thora sa gila bhi sun le.

Hear, O Lord, from the faithful ones this sad lament,

From those used to hymn praise, a word of discontent.

Shikwa Stanza 3

Thi to maujood azal se hi teri zaat-e-qadim,

Phool tha zeb-e-chaman, par na pareshan thi shamim;

Eternally were you present, Lord, eternally omniscient,

The flower hung upon the tree, but without incense.

Shart insaaf hai, ai, sahib-e-altaf-e-amim,

Boo-e-gul phailti kis tarah jo hoti na nasim?

Be Thou fair, tell us truly, O fountainhead without the of grace,

How could the scent spread without the breeze apace?

Shikwa Stanza 4

Hum se pahle tha ajab tere jahan ka manzir,

Kahin masjood the pather, kahin maabood shajar,

The world presented a queer sight ere we took the stage,

Stones and plants in your stead were worshipped in that age.

Khugar-e-paikar-e-mahsoos thi insaan ki nazar,

Maanta phir koi un-dekhe khuda ko kyonkar?

Man, being inured to senses, couldn't accept a thing unseen,

How could a formless God impress his senses keen?

Tujhko maalum hai leta tha koi naam tira?

Quwwat-e-baazoo-e-muslim ne kiya kaam tira!

Tell me, Lord, if anyone ever invoked Thy name,

The strength of Muslim arm alone restored Thy fame

Shikwa Stanza 5

Bas rahe the yahin salijuq bhi, toorani bhi,

Ahl-e-chin cheen mein, iran mein sasaani bhi,

There was no dearth of people on this earth before,

Turkish tribes and Persian clans lived in days of yore;

Isi maamoore mein aabad the yunaani bhi,

Isi duniya mein yahudi bhi the, nusraani bhi,

The Greeks and the Chinese both bred and throve,

Christians, as well as the Jews on this planet, roved.

Par tere naam pe talwar uthai kis ne,

Baat jo bigdi huwi thi who banaai kis ne?

But who in Thy holy name raised his valiant sword,

Who set the things right, resolved the rigmarole?

Shikwa Stanza 6

Thi hameen ek tere maarka aaraaon mein!

Khushkion mein kabhi larte, kabhi dariyaon mein,

We were the warrior bands battling for Thy cause,

Now on land, now on the water, we the crusades fought.

Di azaanen kabhi europe ke kaleesaaon mein,

Kabhi Africa ke tapte hue sahraaon mein.

Now in Europe's synods did we loudly pray,

Now in African deserts made a bold foray.

Shan Ankhon Mein Na Jachti Thi Jahan Daron Ki

Kalima Parhte The Hum Chaon Mein Talwaron Ki

The world's glories and grandeurs were not attractive to our eyes,

For we recited the Kalima even under the shade of drawn swords!

Shikwa Stanza 7

Hum Jo Jeete The To Jnagon Ki Musibat Ke Liye

Aur Merte The Tere Naam Ki Azmat Ke Liye

What we lived for, was only to endure the hardship of your battles,

And what we died for, was the glory of your name,

Thi na kuchh teg zani apni hakumat ke liye,

Sar ba-kaf phirte the kya dahar mein daulat ke liye?

Not for territorial greed did we wield the sword,

Not for pelf and power did we suffer the blows.

Qaum apni jo zar-o-maal-e-jahan par marti,

But faroshi ke iwaz but shikni kyon karti?

Had we been temped by the greed of glittering gold,

Instead of breaking idols, would have idols sold.

Shiksha Stanza 8

Tal Na Sakte The Agar Jang Mein Arh Jate The

Paon Sheron Ke Bhi Maidan Se Ukhar Jate The

We couldn't be stopped, once we stood firm in battles,

Even the lions would flee the battlefield,

Tujh Se Sarkash Huwa Koi To Bighar Jate The

Taeg Kya Cheez Hai, Hum Toup Se Larh Jate The

Those who rebelled against you became ruined (from our fury)

What were swords to us? We would charge against cannons!

Naqsh tauheed ka har dil pe bithaya hum ne,

Zer-e-khanjar bhi yeh paigham sunaya hum ne.

We impressed on every heart the oneness of our mighty Lord,

Even under the threat of the sword, bold and clever was our call.

Shikwa Stanza 9

Tu hi kah de ke ukhara dar-e-khyber kis ne,

Shaher qaiser ka jo tha us ko kiya sar kis ne?

Who conquered, tell us Thou, the fearful Khyber pass?

Who vanquished the Imperial Rome, who made it fall?

Tode makhluq khudawandon ke paikar kis ne?

Kaat kar rakh diye kaffaar ke lashkar kis ne?

Who broke the idols of the primitive folks?

Who fought the kafirs, massacred their hordes?

Aa gaya ain laraai mein agar waqt-e-namaz,

Qibla roo ho ke zamin bos hui qaum-e-hejaz,

If the prayer time arrived right amid the war,

With their faces turned to Kaaba, knelt down the brave Hejaz.

Kis Ne Thanda Kiya Atishkuda-e-Iran Ko?

Kis Ne Phir Zinda Kiya Tazkara-e-Yazdaan Ko?

Who cooled the fire temples of Iran?

And who was it then that gave life to the remembrance of God?

Shikwa Stanza 10

Kon Si Qoum Faqat Teri Talabgar Huwi

Aur Tere Liye Zehmat Kash-e-Paikaar Huwi

Which nation was it that merely desired You?

And for You became the embodiment of enduring hardship?

Kis Ki Shamsheer Jahangeer, Jahandar Huwi

Kis Ki Takbeer Se Dunya Teri Baidar Huwi

Whose might conquest triumphed over the whole world?

Whose Takbeer was it from that the world awakened?

Kis Ki Haibat Se Sanam Sehme Huwe Rehte The

Munh Ke Bal Gir Ke 'HU WA-ALLAH HU AHAD' Kehte The

Because of whose fear did the false-gods shrink in terror,

Passionately crying “There is no god but God,” as they crumbled down in submission?

Shikwa Stanza 11

Aa Gaya Ain Laraai Mein Agar Waqt-e-Namaz

Qibla Ru Ho Ke Zameen Bos Huwi Qoum-e-Hijaz

If the time for prayer came in the exact midst of a fight,

Facing the Ka'aba, the nation of Hijaz would kiss the earth.

Ek hi saf mein khare ho gaye mahmud-o-ayaz,

No koi banda raha aur no koi banda nawaz.

Mahmud and Ayaz stood together in the same flank,

The ruler and the ruled forget the difference in their rank.

Banda-o-sahib-o-muhtaaj-o-ghani ek hue,

Teri sarkar mein pahunche tau sabhi ek hue.

The rich and poor, lord and slave, all were levelled down,

All became brethren in love, with Thy grace crowned.

Shikwa Stanza 12

Mehfil-e-kaun-o-makaan mein shar-o-shaam phire,

Mai-e-tauheed ko lekar sift-e-jam phire.

We roamed the world through, visited every place,

Did our rounds like the cup, serving sacred ale.

Koh Mein, Dasht Mein Le Kar Tera Pegham Phire

Aur Maaloom Hai Tujh Ko, Kabhi Nakaam Phire !

In mountains, in Deserts, we traversed with your message,

And You know well, ever did we roam with defeat or failure?

Dasht tau dasht hain, darya bhi na chhore hum ne,

Bahr-e-zulmaat mein daura diye ghore hum ne.

Forget about the forests, we spared not the seas,

Into the dark, unfathomed ocean, we pushed our steeds.

Shikwa Stanza 13

Safah-e-dahar se baatil ko mitaya hum ne,

Nau-e-insaan ko ghulami se chhuraya hum ne,

We removed falsehood from the earth's face,

We broke the shackles of the human race.

Tere kaabe ko jabeenon se basaya hum ne,

Tere quraan ko seenon se lagaya hum ne.

We reclaimed your Kaaba with our kneeling brows,

We pressed the sacred Quran to our hearts and soul.

Phir bhi hum se yeh gila hai, ke wafadar nahin,

Hum wafadar nahin, tu bhi tau dildar nahin!

Even then you grumble, we are false, untrue,

If you call us faithless, tell us what are you?

Shikwa Stanza 14

Ummatain Aur Bhi Hain, In Mein Gunahgar Bhi Hain

Ejz Wale Bhi Hain, Mast-e-Mai-e-Pindar Bhi Hain

For there are those of other faiths too, among them sinners too,

There are humble ones too, also ones drunk with the wine of pride,

In Mein Kahil Bhi Hain, Ghafil Bhi Hain, Hushyar Bhi Hain

Saikron Hain Ke Tere Naam Se Baizar Bhi Hain

In them there are those of little worth, ignorant ones as well as intelligent ones,

And there are hundreds who are even weary of your name too,

Rahmaten hain tiri aghiyar ke kashaanon par,

Barq girti hai to bechare musalmaanon par!

You reserve your favours for men of other shades,

While you hurl your bolts on the Muslim race.

Shikwa Stanza 15

But Sanam Khanon Mein Kehte Hain, Musalman Gye

Hai Khushi In Ko Ke Kaabe Ke Nigehban Gye

The idols in temples say, "the Muslims are gone",

Happiness is theirs' that the guardians of the Ka'ba are gone,

Manzil-e-dehr Se Unthon Ke Hudi Khawan Gye

Apni Baghlon Mein Dabaye Huwe Quran Gye

They say, “The world is well rid now of hymn‐reciting camel‐men,

The ones who held the Quran under their arms are gone"

Khandah Zan Kufr Hai, Ehsas Tujhe Hai Ke Nahin

Apni Touheed Ka Kuch Paas Tujhe Hai Ke Nahin

Disbelief 'itself' rejoices and mocks us, do you even care or not?

Of your own One-ness, do you have any care or not?

Shikwa Stanza 16

Yeh shikait nahin, hain un ke khazane maamur,

Nahin mehfil mein jinhen baat bhi karne ka shaoor,

This is not our complaint that such alone are blessed,

Who does not know the etiquette, nor even can converse.

Qahar tau yeh hai ke kafir ko milen hoor-o-qasoor,

Aur bechaare musalmaan ko faqt waada-e-hoor!

The tragedy is while kafirs are with hoores actually blest,

On vague hopes of hoores in heaven, the Muslim race is made to rest!

Ab Woh Altaf Nahin, Hum Pe Anayat Nahin

Baat Ye Kya Hai Ke Pehli Si Madarat Nahin

Now we don't get any favours. nor is any kindness showered on us,

What is this, O Allah, that you are not even giving that prior courtesy?

Shikwa Stanza 17

Kyun Musalmanon Mein Hai Doulat-e-Dunya Nayaab

Teri Qudrat To Hai Woh Jis Ki Na Had Hai Na Hisab

Why is it that between Muslims worldly wealth is scarce?

Your power is that which has no limit nor measure,

Tu Jo Chahe To Uthe Seena-e-Sehra Se Habab

Rahroo-e-Dasht Ho Seeli Zada Mouj-e-Saraab

With only your will water can flow from even the heart of the desert,

And the desert traveler can get stormed (drenched) by the waves of a mirage,

Taan-e-aghiyaar hai, ruswai hai, nadaari hai,

kya tere nam pe marne ka iwaz khwari hai?

Poverty, taunts, ignominy stare us in the face,

Is humiliation the sole reward of our suffering race?

Shikwa Stanza 18

Bani Aghyar Ki Ab Chahne Wali Dunya

Reh Gyi Apne Liye Aik Khiyali Dunya

This world becomes the world that others wanted,

What has remained for us is an imaginary world,

Hum tau jeete hain ke duniya mein tera naam rahe,

Kahin mumkin hai saqi na rahe, jaam rahe?

To perpetuate Thy name is our sole concern,

Can drinks be served without a bartender’s aid?

Shikwa Stanza 19

Teri mehfil bhi gai, chahne wale bhi gaye,

Shab ki aahen bhi gaien, subah ke nale bhi gaye,

Gone is your assemblage, off your lovers, have sailed,

The midnight sights are no more heard, nor the morning wails;

Dil Tujhe Debhi Gaye, Apna Sila Le Bhi Gaye,

Aa Ke Baithe Bhi Na The, Ke Nikaale Bhi Gaye.

We came, gave our hearts to you, received our reward, and left,

When we came we hardly sat, we were even thrown out

Dil tujhe debhi gaye, apna sila le bhi gaye,

Aa ke baithe bhi na the, ke nikaale bhi gaye.

They pledged their hearts to you, what is their return?

Hardly had they stepped inside when they were expelled.

Aae ushaaq, gaye waada-e-farda lekar,

Ab unhen dhoond chirag-e-rukh-e-zeba lekar!

Thy lovers came and went away, fed on hopes of future grace,

Search them now with the lamp of your glowing face.

Shikwa Stanza 20

Dard-e-laila bhi wohi, qais ka pahlu bhi wohi,

Nejd ke dasht-o-jabal mein ram-e-aahoo bhi wohi,

Unassuaged is Laila's ache, unquenched is Qais's thirst,

In the wilderness of Nejd, the wild deer are still berserk.

Ishq Ka Dil Bhi Wohi, Husn Ka Jaadoo Bhi Wohi,

Ummat-e-Ahmed-e-Mursil Bhi Wohi, Tu Bhi Wohi,

The same passion thrills the hearts, enchanting still is beauty's gaze,

You are the same as before, same too is the Prophet's race.

Phir yeh aazurdagi-e-ghair-sabab kya maani,

Apne shaidaaon pe yeh chashm-e-ghazab kya maani?

Why then this indifference, without a cause or fault?

Why with your threatening looks dost thou break our heart?

Shikwa Stanza 21

Tujh Ko Chora Ke Rasool-e-Arabi Ko Chora?

Butgari Paisha Kiya, Bout Shikani Ko Chora?

Have we abandoned you? Have we abandoned the messenger of Arabia?

Did we make idols, abandon their destruction?

Ishq Ko, Ishq Ki Ashuftah-Sari Ko Chora?

Rasm-e-Salman-o-Awais-e-Qarani Ko Chora?

Did we abandon Your Love or the madness that goes with it?

Did we abandon the traditions of Salman and Awais?

Aag Takbeer Ki Seenon Mein Dabi Rakhte Hain

Zindagi Misl-e-Bilal-e-Habshi (R.A.) Rakhte Hain

The fire of Takbeer we keep suppressed in our hearts,

And we live our lives as exemplified by Bilal of Abyssinia!

Shikwa Stanza 22

Ishq ki khair, who pehli si ada bhi na sahi,

Jaada paimaai taslim-o-raza bhi na sahi,

Accepted that the flame of love burneth low and dim,

We do not, as in your, dance attendance on your whims;

Muztarib Dil Sifat-e-Qibla Nama Bhi Na Sahi

Aur Pabandi-e-Aaeen-e-Wafa Bhi Na Sahi

Our agitated hearts may not now turn to the Qibla like trusted compasses also,

And we may not follow the laws of faith also,

Kabhi hum se, kabhi ghairon se shanasaai hai,

Baat kahne ki nahin, tu bhi tau harjaai hai.

But you too, pardon us, possess a coquettish heart,

Now on us, now on others, alight your amorous darts.

Shikwa Stanza 23

Sar-e-Faran Pe Kiya Deen Ko Kamil Tu Ne

Ek Ishare Mein Hazaron Ke Liye Dil Tu Ne

Upon the peak of Mount Faran Your faith You did perfect,

With one divine gesture, you stole the hearts of thousands

Atish Andoz Kiya Ishq Ka Hasil Tu Ne

Phoonk Di Garmi-e-Rukhsar Se Mehfil Tu Ne

You fanned the flames of the yield of Love,

You kindled our gathering with the warmth of your cheeks,

Aaj Kyun Seene Humare Sharar Abad Nahin

Hum Wohi Sokhta Saman Hain, Tuhe Yaad Nahin?

Why is it today that our chests are void of any of those (former) sparks?

We are still those scorched victims (from Love's heat), do you not remember?

Shikwa Stanza 24

Wadi-e-Najd Mein Woh Shor-e-Silasil Na Raha

Qais Diwana-e-Nazara Mehmil Na Raha

In the valley of Najd, the clanging of chains is no longer heard,

Qais no longer remained crazed with the spectacle of saddles,

Hosle Woh Na Rahe, Hum Na Rahe, Dil Na Raha

Ghar Ye Ujhra Hai Ke Tu Ronaq-e-Mehfil Na Raha

That longing has gone, we have not remained, our wishes have not remained,

Our houses have become forlorn, for you are no longer the light of our congregations,

Ae Khush Aan Roz Ke Ayi-o-Bsad Naz Ayi

Be-Hijabana Soo'ay Mehfil-e-Ma Baaz Ayi

O! Blessed be that day when You shall return, for hundred times

Your Elegance would follow unveiled towards this gathering of mine!

Shikwa Stanza 25

Badahkash Gair Hain Gulshan Mein Lab-e-Joo Baithe

Sunte Hain Jaam Bakaf Naghma-e-Kuku Baithe

Wine-drinkers are the others, sitting in the flower garden like river mouths,

Listening with a goblet in hand the song of the Cuckoo,

Door Hungama-e-Gulzar Se Yak Soo Baithe

Tere Diwane Bhi Hain Muntazir 'Hoo' Baithe

From all this garden’s riot far, Calm in a corner seated too,

Love‐longing lunatics await Your frenzy‐kindling breath of 'hoo'!

Apne Parwanon Ko Phir Zauq-e-Khud Afrozi De

Barq-e-Dairina Ko Farman-e-Jigar Sozi De

Give your lovers a taste of your enlightened self again!

Strike your ancient thunderbolt and set these ash-cold hearts alight!

Shikwa Stanza 26

Qoum-e-Awara Anaa Taab Hai Phir Soo'ay Hijaz

Le Ura Bulbul-e-Be Par Ko Mazak-e-Parwaz

The wandering nation is again riding towards Hijaz,

The passion of flight lies in the wingless nightingale,

Muztarib Bagh Ke Har Ghunche Mein Hai Boo'ay Niaz

Tu Zara Chair To De, Tashna-e-Mizrab Hai Saaz

The scent of submission is now in every bud of the restless garden,

Just start the music, for the instruments are thirsty for their plectrums,

Naghme Betaab Hain Taron Se Niklne Ke Liye

Toor Muztar Hai Ussi Aag Mein Jalne Ke Liye

The Psalms are agitated to arise from their strings,

And Mount Sinai desires to burn in that same fire once more!

Shikwa Stanza 27

Mushkalain Ummat-e-Marhoom Ki Asan Kar De

Moor-e-Bemaya Ko Humdosh-e-Suleman Kar De

Ease the struggles of your blessed followers,

Raise You the helpless and to the reputation of Suleiman

Jins-e-Nayaab-e-Mohabbat Ko Phir Arzaan Kar De

Hind Ke Dair Nasheenon Ko Musalman Kar De

Make You that invaluable produce of Love within our grasp,

The idolaters of India, make them Muslim,

Joo'ay Khoon Mee Chakad Az Hasrat-e-Dairina-e-Maa

Mee Tapd Nala Ba Nashtar Kadah-e-Seena-e-Maa,

A river of blood drains from my long-held desires,

Complaints throb in this dagger-wounded chest of mine!

Shikwa Stanza 28

Boo-e-Gul Le Gyi Bairun-e-Chaman Raaz-e-Chaman

Kya Qayamat Hai Ke Khud Phool Hain Ghammaz-e-Chaman !

The fragrance of the flowers has carried the secrets of the garden beyond it,

What a misfortune that the Flowers themselves have become the informers of the Garden!

ahd-e-gul khatam hua, tut gaya saaz-e-chaman,

ur gaye dalion se zamzama pardaaz-e-chaman.

The spring has now taken leave, broken lies the lyre string,

The birds that chirped among the leaves have also taken wing;

Ek bulbul hai ke hai mahw-e-tarannum ab tak,

Uss ke seene mein hai naghmon ka talatam ab tak.

A single nightingale is left singing on the tree,

A flood of a song in her breast is longing for release.

Shikwa Stanza 29

Qumrian shaakh-e-sanober se gurezaan bhi huin,

Pattian phool ki jhar jhar ke pareshan bhi huin;

From atop the firs and pines, the doves have flown away,

The floral petals lie scattered all along the way.

Who purani ravishen bagh ki weeran bhi huin,

Daalian parahan-e-barg se uriaan bhi huin.

Desolate lie the garden paths once dressed and neat,

Leafless hang the branches on the naked trees.

Qaid-e-mausim se tabiat rahi aazad uski,

Kaash gulshan mein samjhta koi faryaad uski.

The nightingale is unconcerned with the season's range,

Would that someone in the grove appreciates her wail.

Shikwa Stanza 30

Lutf Merne Main Hai Baqi, Na Maza Jeene Mein

Kuch Maza Hai To Yehi Khoon-e-Jigar Peene Mein

There is no pleasure left in death, nor is there any joy in living,

If there is any delight left, it is in devouring our own hearts out

Kitne Betaab Hain Jouhar Mere Aaeene Mein

Kis Qadar Jalwe Tarapte Hain Mere Seene Mein

How impatient are the gashes in my reflection,

How the visions inside my heart tremble

Iss Gulistan Mein Magar Dekhne Wale Hi Nahin

Dagh Jo Seene Mein Rakhte Hun, Woh Lale Hi Nahin

But in this Garden lives not one to see,

Those poppies which keep the marks of God's love, there are not there!

Shikwa Stanza 31

Chaak is bulbul-e-tanha ki nawa se dil hon,

Jaagne wale isi baang-e-dara se dil hon.

May the nightingale's wail pierces the listeners' hearts,

May the clinking caravan awaken slumbering thoughts!

Yaani phir zinda naye ahd-e-wafa se dil hon,

Phir isi bada-e-deereena ke pyaase dil hon.

Let the hearts pledge anew their faith to you, O Lord,

Let's revive our cups from the taverns of the past.

Ajmy khum hai tau kya, mai tau hejaazi hai miri,

Naghma hindi hai tau tya, lai tau hejaazi hai miri.

Through I hold a Persian cup, the wine is pure Hejaz,

Thought I sing an Indian song, the turn is of the Arabian cast.
