Before Dimple Kapadia, many actors have tried their luck in politics. Actor Sanjay Dutt, who was denied permission by the Supreme Court to contest elections, enjoys the post of national general secretary of the Samajwadi Party.

Bollywood's dreamgirl Hema Malini, who starred in numerous successful Bollywood films in the 1970s, most notably the extremely successful Sholay, joined BJP and became an MP, but she refused to contest the previous Lok Sabha election.
